Storm Shelter Financing in Oklahoma
Flexible financing available, but timing and property access matter. Talk with Sprague’s Backhoe first to make sure everything is ready before you apply.
Not every property is accessible for installation. A quick call helps avoid delays and loan issues.
How Storm Shelter Financing Works in Oklahoma
A storm shelter is one of the most important investments many Oklahoma families will make. At Sprague’s Backhoe, we help homeowners explore financing options for both above ground and below ground storm shelters, but the first step is always a quick conversation about pricing, placement, and property access.
We regularly hear from homeowners who have already been approved for a loan before ever calling, only to find out later that their yard doesn’t have the access needed for installation. Talking first helps avoid delays, extra costs, and frustration.
Before you apply, we recommend confirming three things:
- The shelter type and size that fits your needs
- Current pricing
- Whether your property has the access required for delivery and installation
Once those details are clear, financing becomes much more straightforward and easier to plan with confidence.

We offer both above ground and below ground storm shelters, with multiple sizes available to fit your family and your property.

Important Timing to Understand
Timing is one of the most important parts of financing a storm shelter.
Once you’re pre-approved, you typically have about 30 days to close your loan. Payments usually begin around 30 days after closing, whether your shelter has been installed yet or not.
During storm season, especially in the spring and early summer, installation timelines can extend several months due to weather and demand.
That’s why it’s so important to talk with us before applying. We can help you line up your financing with a realistic installation timeline so you’re not making payments before your shelter is installed.
Additional Storm Shelter Funding Options in Oklahoma
Financing through Tinker Federal Credit Union is a great option, but it’s not the only one.
Some Oklahoma homeowners may qualify for storm shelter assistance through tribal programs, rebates, or other funding opportunities. In some cases, these programs can cover a large portion of the cost or even the full amount.
If you’re a member of a tribe or think you might qualify, it’s worth taking a look at current programs before applying for financing.

Storm Shelter Financing FAQs
Because backhoe services are offered on a limited basis, many questions come down to project fit, access, and scheduling. Here’s what to know before reaching out.
Do I need to call before applying for financing?
Yes. We strongly recommend calling before you apply.
We’ll go over pricing, placement, and whether your property has the access needed for installation. This helps prevent situations where someone is approved for a loan but we can’t install the shelter due to site limitations.
What happens if I get approved before calling?
This happens more often than you’d think.
In some cases, we find out the yard is too tight, too soft, or doesn’t have the clearance needed for our equipment. That can delay your project or require changes you weren’t expecting.
A quick call beforehand helps avoid all of that.
How long is a loan approval good for?
Most pre-approvals are valid for about 30 days, which means the loan needs to be finalized within that window.
If your installation is scheduled later, that’s okay. Some customers choose to move forward with closing and begin payments before installation, while others prefer to time everything more closely.
We can help you decide what makes the most sense based on your timeline.
When do payments start on a storm shelter loan?
Payments typically begin about 30 days after closing your loan.
Depending on the season, your shelter may not be installed yet when payments begin, especially during peak storm season.
Can I make a down payment and finance the rest?
Yes! You can choose to finance your full storm shelter cost or make a partial down payment and finance the remainder. Just let us know your preference when you call so we can provide TFCU with the correct financing amount on your purchase order.
Can I finance the full cost of a storm shelter?
Yes. Tinker Federal Credit Union typically allows you to finance the full project amount, with no down payment required.
What credit score do I need to qualify?
Loan approval is handled directly by Tinker Federal Credit Union.
They will review your credit, income, and overall application to determine eligibility. If you have questions about qualifying, it’s best to contact TFCU directly.
Do I need to be a member of TFCU?
Yes, but it’s simple.
TFCU requires a small membership deposit to open an account, and they will walk you through that as part of the loan process.
Can I use financing for both above ground and below ground shelters?
Yes.
Financing can be used for both above ground and below ground storm shelters, depending on your location and installation eligibility.
What if my property isn’t accessible for installation?
We’ll talk through that before you apply.
Our equipment requires specific width, height, and ground conditions. If access is limited, we’ll go over your options before you move forward so there are no surprises.
Do you offer in-house financing?
No. Financing is handled through trusted lenders like Tinker Federal Credit Union.
We’ll guide you through the process and provide everything needed for your loan, but approval and terms are handled directly by the lender.
Can I combine financing with a grant or rebate?
Some programs may be used alongside financing, depending on the specific requirements. We can walk you through your options based on your situation.
