Is the 5×7 Above Ground Storm Shelter Right for You?
Not all storm shelters are created equal. At Sprague’s Backhoe, we focus on quality construction, personal service, and long-term customer satisfaction. Here’s what sets our 5×7 above ground shelter apart:
Who is this Shelter For?
The 5×7 above-ground storm shelter is a practical option for homeowners who want reliable storm protection with a compact footprint. This size is commonly chosen by smaller households or those who want protection without excess space, while still allowing room for essential items.
Above-ground storm shelters are installed statewide across Oklahoma, making this option available regardless of location.
Design & Premium Features
The 5×7 above-ground storm shelter features precast concrete construction with a stacked stone stamp pattern that creates a natural rock wall appearance. Its single-tone finish blends well with residential landscapes while maintaining a clean, understated look. The shelter includes a powder-coated steel door designed to resist corrosion and heavy-duty anchors that secure it to the ground, along with simple, walk-in access for fast entry when weather conditions change.
Warranty
This storm shelter includes a manufacturer-backed warranty covering structural components and workmanship, with full warranty details provided in your storm shelter agreement prior to installation.
Sizing Specifications & Capacity
The 5×7 above-ground storm shelter provides 35 square feet of interior space. Based on FEMA space recommendations, the minimum safety capacity is approximately 7–11 people standing, while more comfortable use is typically 3–5 people with room for supplies or pets. These figures reflect minimum safety guidance versus everyday comfort, and many families choose a larger size for additional seating or storage.
ENGINEERING SPECIFICATIONS
Our above-ground storm shelters are designed to meet and exceed FEMA 320 and ICC 500 guidelines for storm shelter construction. FEMA does not “approve” individual shelters; instead, these guidelines establish design and performance standards intended to provide protection during extreme weather events.
Each shelter is constructed using 5,000 PSI reinforced concrete with ½-inch rebar on 12-inch centers and features a heavy-duty triple-latch steel door system engineered for extreme wind resistance. When properly installed, these engineering standards are intended to withstand extreme tornado conditions, including EF5-level wind forces.
This level of construction is standard across our above-ground storm shelter models and reflects our commitment to building shelters specifically for Oklahoma weather conditions.

Why Homeowners Choose Sprague’s Backhoe
Established Oklahoma Contractor
Serving Oklahoma families since 2013, Sprague’s Backhoe is a locally owned company with deep experience working in Oklahoma soil, weather, and residential properties.
Installer-Led, Not Sales-Driven
We are the installer — not a reseller or sales company. Every shelter we install is handled by our own team, from placement to final installation.
Consistent, Proven Install Standards
We use standardized installation methods and proven shelter designs rather than custom structural modifications. This ensures consistency, safety, and long-term reliability across every install.
Transparent Agreements & Expectations
Your storm shelter agreement clearly outlines pricing, warranty information, and installation expectations before installation day — no surprises or fine print after the fact.
Strong Local Reputation
We’re proud of the trust we’ve earned through years of work across Oklahoma, with hundreds of local installations and consistent five-star customer feedback.
Focused on Long-Term Safety
We don’t rush installs or cut corners. Our focus is on proper placement, durable installation, and shelters built to be relied on when it matters most.
Financing Available
We work with Tinker Federal Credit Union to offer low-APR financing options for qualifying homeowners. Many customers choose financing to make storm shelter installation more manageable without delaying protection.
Financing is optional, and we’re happy to provide information if it’s something you’d like to explore.

Frequently Asked Questions: 5x7 Above Ground Safe Rooms
Do you require a deposit or charge additional fees?
No deposit is required to reserve your installation. Payment is due in full at the time of installation. We accept cash, check, and card payments. A 4% convenience fee applies to payments made by credit or debit card.
Do you offer financing options?
We do not offer in-house payment plans, but we do work with Tinker Federal Credit Union to offer low-APR financing options for qualifying homeowners.
What areas do you serve?
We install above-ground storm shelters across the entire state of Oklahoma. A delivery charge may apply for locations outside our standard 60-mile service area.
What access is required for installation?
We need clear access for delivery and installation equipment, which typically includes adequate driveway or yard access for a crane truck. A minimum of 10 feet wide and 14 feet tall clearance is required, with all obstacles such as fences, vehicles, low-hanging branches, or overhead lines cleared prior to installation. Access requirements are reviewed during scheduling so there are no surprises on installation day. Learn more about storm shelter installation access.
Will the shelter look exactly like the photos on your website?
Yes. The 5×7 above-ground storm shelter features a single, non-interchangeable stamped concrete design. This model does not have design variations based on location, so the shelter installed at your property will match the design shown in our photos.
How tall is the 5x7 above-ground storm shelter?
The overall exterior height of our above-ground storm shelters is approximately 7 feet 1 inch from the floor to the peak of the roof. Inside, the height measures approximately 6 feet 2 inches at the peak, with about 5 feet 9¼ inches along the edges where the walls meet the ceiling.
These dimensions provide comfortable standing room for most adults while maintaining the shelter’s structural design and performance.
How is the 5x7 above-ground storm shelter ventilated?
Our above-ground storm shelters are designed with multiple ventilation features to promote airflow during occupancy. Each shelter includes a 3-inch vent, an 8-inch turbine vent, and a vented door. These components work together to allow continuous airflow and help keep the shelter comfortable during severe weather events.
This setup is standard across our above-ground shelter models.
Are your storm shelters FEMA approved?
FEMA does not “approve” or certify individual storm shelters. Instead, FEMA publishes design and construction guidelines that shelters are built to follow.
Our storm shelters are designed to meet and exceed FEMA 320 and ICC 500 guidelines for storm shelter construction. They are built using 6,000 PSI reinforced concrete with reinforced steel and feature a heavy-duty triple-latch steel door system engineered for extreme wind resistance. When properly installed, these design standards are intended to provide protection during extreme tornado conditions.
