What is a Downburst?

A downburst is a strong downward and outward flow of air, typically generated by thunderstorms. As rain-cooled air descends rapidly from a storm, it strikes the ground with immense force, causing damaging winds that can reach speeds of over 100 miles per hour. Downbursts can cause significant damage, similar to tornadoes, but with winds that spread out in all directions rather than rotating.

These wind events are categorized into two main types: microbursts and macrobursts. Microbursts cover an area less than 2.5 miles in diameter, while macrobursts impact a larger area. Both types can cause substantial damage to homes, trees, and power lines, making them a serious threat during severe weather.

Downbursts are often mistaken for tornadoes due to their destructive nature. However, meteorologists distinguish the two by the pattern of damage: tornadoes leave a circular path of destruction, while downbursts produce damage that radiates outward from a central point.

In regions prone to severe weather, installing storm shelters and safe rooms can provide essential protection from the hazardous winds caused by downbursts and other storm-related phenomena.
