Are your storm shelters FEMA approved or certified?
No. FEMA does not approve or certify individual storm shelters or manufacturers.
Any claim that a specific company offers the “only FEMA approved” or “FEMA certified” shelter is not accurate. FEMA provides guidelines for how shelters should be designed and built, but they do not certify or endorse individual products.
Sprague’s Backhoe installs storm shelters that are designed to meet and exceed FEMA guidelines (P-320 for residential and P-361 for community shelters) and meet ICC-500 storm shelter standards when properly installed. Proper installation matters just as much as the shelter itself.
What sizes do you offer?
Sprague’s Backhoe offers standard precast storm shelter sizes only. Above-ground shelters are available in 5×7, 6×8, and 7×9. Below-ground options include 6×8 slope entry, 6×8 Easy Access, and 7×10 slope entry. You can compare options here: Oklahoma Storm Shelters
How many people fit in a storm shelter?

Which is better, above-ground or below-ground?
Neither is automatically better for every situation. The best choice depends on your location, access, mobility needs, budget, and personal preference. Above-ground shelters are easier to access. How much do storm shelters cost?
All of our pricing is available directly on our website. There are no hidden fees, no installation charges, and no sales tax added to storm shelter pricing.
The only additional costs to be aware of are optional dirt haul off for below-ground installations and a 4% convenience fee for card payments.

Do you require a deposit?
No. Storm shelter payment is due at installation. Sprague’s Backhoe does not require a deposit for storm shelter installs.
Do you offer financing?

How long does installation take?
All of our installations are completed the same day.
Above-ground storm shelters typically take around 2 hours to install. Below-ground storm shelters usually take about 3–4 hours in most cases.
Timing can vary slightly depending on access, ground conditions, and weather, but our goal is always a smooth, efficient installation process.
Do you install storm shelters statewide?
Above-ground storm shelters are installed statewide across Oklahoma. Below-ground storm shelters are limited to about a 60-mile radius from Blanchard.
What kind of access do you need for installation?

Do you install storm shelters in garages?
No. Sprague’s Backhoe does not install storm shelters inside garages.
Do you build custom-size storm shelters?
No. Sprague’s Backhoe installs standard precast sizes only. Custom sizes are not offered.
Do you sell shelters without installation?
No. Sprague’s Backhoe does not sell shelters for pickup or customer self-installation. Installation is included.
Do I need a permit for a storm shelter?
Permit requirements vary by city and county. In most cases, the property owner is responsible for obtaining permits, but Sprague’s Backhoe can provide the documentation needed for the process.
Do you handle OKIE811 locates?
Yes. Sprague’s Backhoe handles the OKIE811 locate request before installation. However, private lines such as septic, propane, sprinkler, water, and other non-public utilities are not located by OKIE811 and must be marked or identified by the property owner.
Can you help with storm shelter registration?
Sprague’s Backhoe can provide the information you need for registration, but registration requirements vary by local emergency management office.
Can a storm shelter be installed anywhere in my yard?

Do above-ground shelters need a concrete pad?
No. Our above-ground storm shelters include a built-in concrete floor and are anchored directly into the ground. A separate concrete pad is not required.
How are above-ground shelters anchored?
Above-ground storm shelters are secured using heavy-duty ground anchors. The number of anchors depends on the shelter size and model, ensuring the unit is properly secured when installed.
Can above-ground storm shelters survive an EF5 tornado?

How do I clean and maintain a storm shelter?

Can you relocate my existing storm shelter?

What happens if it’s too wet to install?
